Event Recap: September Professional Development

On Tuesday, September 19, Sheri Jenkinson spoke at Dallas SWE’s professional development event on the topic, “Is Solving for Gender Diversity the Answer to a Larger Economic Challenge.”  She discussed gender inequality in the workplace and these disparities’ projected effects on meeting the technical and engineering employment demands expected in 2025.  Attendees were engaged with an open dialogue with Sheri, sharing their own experiences and best practices for engaging employees in an inclusive work environment. We had an AMAZING time.  If you missed this event, check out our other upcoming professional development and social events on our website calendar!

Event Recap: Grapefest

On Friday, September 15, representatives from our Membership Committee invited Dallas SWE to enjoy Grapefest in downtown Grapevine! We spent some time watching the grape stomp and walking down Main Street. A great time was had by all. If you missed this event, check out our other upcoming professional development and social events on our website calendar!

Member of the Month: Shannon Cruise

With our Member of the Month program, Dallas SWE seeks to recognize some of our non-officer members whose technical contributions, leadership accomplishments, or SWE volunteer service are particularly noteworthy. If you would like to nominate a Dallas SWE member for his/her contributions, please email us.

Our September Member of the Month is Shannon Cruise! Shannon is a Facilities Engineer for Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems.  She develops tactical space plans across approximately two million square feet over several buildings and also works as a project manager on a multi-functional team.  She started with Raytheon in 2012 after relocating from Cleveland, Ohio.

Before moving to Dallas, Shannon worked for a small geotechnical company, testing concrete, soils, and foundations after receiving her degree in Construction Engineering Technology from the University of Toledo.  While at UT, she was a member of Phi Sigma Rho, a sorority for women in engineering and engineering technology.

Shannon joined SWE shortly after moving to Dallas in 2012 and was just recently appointed chair of the Membership Committee.  She is very proud to serve SWE and hopes to continue to serve such a great organization in the future.

“I have gotten a lot out of SWE and have built some wonderful friendships since joining.  I am hoping to give back what I have received both from SWE and from my engineering career.  SWE has helped me to push myself harder as well as open doors for more discussion on solving issues for women in engineering.”

Outreach Upcoming Events and Resources

One of SWE’s major missions is to inspire the next generation of engineers by sharing our experiences and telling students what being an engineer is all about. Below are a few ways that you can get involved in that mission!

  • We are in the starting phases of planning for our fall Design Your World Event. Stay tuned to your email and our website for upcoming announcements and a call for volunteers!
  • On Tuesday, September 26, from 8am to 2pm, Ten80 Education is hosting a STEM Innovation Experience for high school students in Plano. They are looking for volunteers to help out and engage the students in conversations. View their flyer for more information on what they’re looking for and how to sign up!
  • Not a K-12 Outreach event, but we enjoy great relationships with our local Collegiate SWEsters and love to interact with their members! The UTA SWE section is looking for professionals to participate in a panel discussion Thursday, October 19th from 7pm-9pm at the Maverick Activities Center (MAC). If you’re interested in joining, please email UTA SWE President Mihika Naik directly.
  • On Friday, October 20th at 4:30pm, the SWENext club at Frisco High School will be building their first project, a T-shirt cannon, and are looking for mentors/volunteers to help! If you are interested in being a part of this project, please contact Kate Van Dellen directly.
  • Check out our Outreach resource page and sign up to participate in other services that connect passionate STEM Outreach volunteers with schools, events, and students in need of inspiration from speakers and mentors such as yourself. We don’t want to reinvent the wheel and create our own connection service, so these resources are your direct path to your local communities. Join in the fun!
  • When you represent SWE at an Outreach event, even if it wasn’t planned by us, submit the event information to SWE’s Outreach Metrics Tool. It’s a simple survey that takes about 5 minutes and lets SWE HQ know how you’re contributing to our mission to Aspire, Advance, Achieve!

WE17 Conference Reminders

As September comes to a close, get ready for a very busy October for Dallas SWE! One of our major upcoming events is the WE17 Conference in Austin October 26-28.
