A Message from the Dallas SWE President

Dear Dallas SWE-sters,

On behalf of the Dallas SWE Executive Council, welcome to FY19! We are looking forward to another great year, with continued opportunities for professional development, social activities, outreach, and so much more. On Saturday, July 14th, the FY18 Executive Council transitioned roles and responsibilities to our current FY19 Council. We had a productive meeting, brainstorming ideas for the year to come. We’ll keep you posted of all our upcoming event through our mailing list (sign up on dallaswe.org, if you haven’t already) and through social media; connect with us via Facebook, TwitterLinkedIn, or Instagram.

Before I talk about the future, I want to thank every FY18 officer, committee chair, and committee member for their hard work and dedication to our Dallas SWE section. Your time and efforts ensured that FY18 was another successful year for Dallas SWE (read the FY18 Year in Review).

We’ve already kicked the year off with one of our longstanding STEM Outreach traditions, participating in Moon Day at the Frontiers of Flight Museum on July 21 (recap coming soon). Next month, the FY19 Dallas SWE Executive Council would love to meet-and-greet with our members at brunch on August 25th (details to follow)!

As a reminder, please renew your memberships for FY19, if you haven’t done so already. SWE membership is an affordable $100. As members, you’ll get free access to Dallas SWE events, amazing webinars, and the career center, as well as discounts to local and regional conferences, and so much more. Plus, you’ll be part of the largest network of women engineers (+40,000 members strong). Click here for a step by step guide on how to renew.

Lastly, if you’re looking for more ways to get involved in SWE, hone your leadership skills, or just do something new, we have a committee for you! We could use your help with planning and coordinating events, outreach activities, fundraising, awards, etc. Click here for a descriptions of committees and fill out the Committee Interest Survey. A Dallas SWE Officer will be in touch with you soon.

We look forward to seeing you at a future event!

Event Recap: June Professional Development Event at Rockwell Collins

The Rockwell Collins Women’s Forum and Dallas Section of the Society of Women Engineers held a joint event on June 7 at Rockwell Collins in Richardson Texas.  The event included a presentation by Uche Maple, Senior Engineering Manager at Rockwell Collins and Dallas SWE Executive Vice President, and a tour of the facility.  Uche presented “Turning Obstacles into Opportunities.”  Key takeaways included:

  • Seek advice from individuals who have expertise in that area and not persons who give their opinions,
  • Refrain from making decisions when we are at our lowest point,
  • Get a support system that carry you through the rough patches.

Uche ended the talk by providing one simple formula for success, (P+T)*A*A=Success.  P=Passion, something that you believe in, T=Talent, something you excel in, A=Association, successful people or organizations and A=Action, steps you can take towards your goal.“Remember that your real wealth can be measured not by what you have, but by what you are.” Napoleon Hill

Event Recap: End of Year Member Appreciation and Award Luncheon

On Saturday, May 19, Dallas SWE members gathered at Maggiano’s in Dallas to celebrate the successes of FY18, recognize some of our outstanding volunteer leaders, and announce this year’s scholarship recipients! FY18 Dallas SWE President Shelley Stracener gave a “state of Dallas SWE” talk highlighting our successful professional development, outreach, membership appreciation, scholarship, and award programs from FY18. You can read a summary of these highlights in our FY18 Year In Review Newsletter!

Attendees enjoyed a 3-course luncheon of delicious salads, entrees, sides, and desserts served family-style. It was a great time to celebrate another great year of membership and leadership in Dallas SWE!

We’ll be on a bit of a hiatus over the summer as our leadership team transitions to the new fiscal year, but stay tuned for summer outreach opportunities and book club meetings. Thank you again to our wonderful members and volunteer leaders who make our organization possible!
