September Professional Development Event Recap

On Wednesday, September 12th, we had a great turnout at Coffee House Cafe in North Dallas for our viewing of the SWE Advance Learning Webinar Hot Trends in Networking. The evening kicked off with a chance to practice networking with a quick introduction game that had everyone up out of their seat and making connections! When the game wrapped up, the webinar was presented as everyone ate their delicious dinner. Since great information was given throughout the webinar, it was occasionally paused, so attendees could practice the presented skills. Once completed, the group continued with a discussion on the importance of networking and mentoring. Many women shared personal examples of how these skills impacted their careers and helped them to succeed. Be sure to join us next month, on October 11 at the Addison Olive Garden, as we learn more about Engineers Without Borders and the great work the local chapter is carrying out locally and abroad!

Come join us at our next Professional Development event. We will learn more about Engineers Without Borders from the Dallas Chapter President, Julie Jones.

Date: Thursday October 11, 2018

Time: 6:00-8:00 PM

Location: Olive Garden, 4240 Belt Line Rd, Addison, TX 75001

Dallas SWE FY19 Bylaws Vote

Your voice matters! Please cast your vote below for our updated Dallas SWE Bylaws, now approved by the SWE Bylaws Committee. You must be a voting member of the Dallas SWE Professional Section and in good standing with the Society to vote: our Executive Council will verify each voter’s member status.

Voting starts September 11th and closes on October 11th.

Section Bylaws Amendments

The below updates are in response to a new professional section bylaws template published by SWE to implement Governance changes approved by the SWE Senate at WE17. The proposed Dallas SWE bylaws were approved by the SWE Bylaws Committee with a few updates from last spring’s version and are presented now to our section members for review. These amendments are considered approved after approval of 2/3 of the ballots received by the published deadline. Please send any questions to dallas.swe@gmail.com.

You can view our current bylaws here.

You can find the proposed bylaws amendments here.

Changes in the proposed bylaws are tracked from the Society’s Modifiable Bylaws Template, not our previous bylaws version, per the Bylaws Committee instructions. Changes are as follows:
  1. Removal of the Section Representative officer position and references to Region Council meetings per the SWE Senate approved Governance restructuring plan.
  2. Change of verbiage around voting / non-voting members of the Society to reference professional / collegiate membership types due to collegiates recently being granted voting member rights. The offices of President and Exec VP must be professional members.
  3. The line in our current bylaws in the Exec VP section concerning their responsibility to plan professional development events has been removed. This is a procedural instruction that is not in SWE’s template and is determined at-will by the section’s leadership: it should not reside in our bylaws.
  4. Modifications from SWE’s template that are specific to our section: filled in section name and number where appropriate, Treasurer term is 2 years instead of 1, Investment Committee members are elected by the membership and not appointed by the Section President, renamed VP to Exec VP, added VP of Membership and VP of Outreach and their respective responsibilities as they are in our current Bylaws.
