SWE Dallas Professional Development Session with NTTA

SWE Dallas recently organized a captivating professional development session in collaboration with the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA). The event, held at NTTA’s Safety Operations Center, offered attendees a unique glimpse into the advanced technologies ensuring safety on North Texas toll roads.

During the session, participants learned about a range of innovative tools and systems deployed by NTTA. These include sensors embedded in roadways that monitor vehicular speed and roadway temperatures, as well as optical and thermal cameras that detect stranded vehicles, crashes, debris, and wrong-way drivers. Integrations with apps like Waze and the development of new reporting apps were also highlighted, showcasing NTTA’s commitment to leveraging technology for enhancing road safety.

A major highlight of the visit was the state-of-the-art control room, equipped with more than twenty 72” monitors that allow dispatchers to monitor roadways 24/7/365. This immersive experience provided valuable insights into NTTA’s operations and its dedication to ensuring efficient and safe travel for motorists.

The session also featured engaging discussions among SWE members, exploring topics such as the role of AI in incident identification, and mechanisms safeguarding drivers’ privacy and data security. These discussions underscored the collective intellect and curiosity of the SWE community.

Two key takeaways from the session resonated strongly with attendees. Firstly, the importance of responsible driving practices, especially abstaining from driving under the influence, and maintaining safe distances from potentially impaired drivers. Secondly, the value of contacting NTTA in case of incidents on North Texas toll roads, as they offer rapid assistance, often faster than insurance companies or AAA.

SWE Dallas extends its sincere thanks to NTTA for hosting such an informative and engaging event. The session not only provided valuable insights into roadway safety technologies but also offered a great networking opportunity for SWE members. We look forward to future collaborations with NTTA and further opportunities for professional development and learning.

Dallas SWE Spring Social – Event Recap

Dallas SWE hosted the annual Spring Social on April 6th at Cottonwood Park. It was a delightful gathering filled with engaging activities and meaningful conversations. Attendees enjoyed talking while working on paint by numbers and coloring book pages.

One of the highlights of the event was the lively discussions about the impact of ChatGPT on academics. Members shared their perspectives on how AI technologies are changing the way this generation’s students are approaching education.

With the solar eclipse around the corner, everyone talked about the rare event and shared how they were planning on celebrating the occasion. Barbara Read showed us the cookies she baked for her coworkers!

The event was also a great opportunity to learn more about our fellow SWE members. We learned that Barbara loves to crotchet and she sent us the instructions on how to crotchet a tote bag using plastic bags! As she mentioned, it is a great artistic venture to take up to celebrate Earth Day! We also learned more about Book Club from Ashley Johnson, our Dallas SWE Book Club lead and learned about everyone’s preferred genres and got quite a few book recommendations.

Overall, the Spring Social was a successful and stress relieving event!

SMU’s She Networks, She Wins Event Recap

On February 22, 2024, Southern Methodist University’s SWE section hosted their largest annual event event of the year: She Networks, She Wins! Every year, SMU SWE and SMU’s Hart Center for Engineering Leadership provide collegiates the opportunity to learn from engineering professionals in the DFW area. The event began with a networking session, which gave attendees the opportunity to speak with Dallas professionals from companies like AT&T, Credera, McCarthy, JP Morgan Chase, and LJA Engineering. After networking, students learned from a panel of remarkable women engineers about what it takes to be successful when making the transition from college to career.

Attendees shared great feedback from the event. Morgan Muir, a Dallas SWE attendee and former member of SMU Society of Women Engineers, recalls how the event shaped her professional career. “Obtaining professional exposure as a college student was key to my early career success. She Networks, She Wins helped me grow tremendously when I was a collegiate. It was so exciting to be on the other side of the event as a professional sharing my career experiences with college students.”

Overall, She Networks, She Wins was a success thanks to the SMU SWE Board, SNSW Sponsors (AT&T, Credera, McCarthy, JP Morgan Chase Co, LJA Engineering), and the event panelists (Tori Lynn of McCarthy, Therese Maher of JP Morgan Chase Co., Larissa Knapp-Scott of LJA Engineering, and Ping Gui – ECE Professor SMU). SMU SWE is so excited to continue providing opportunities for college students through this event in the future.

If you would like to sponsor She Networks, She Wins going forward, please reach out to smu.swe@smu.edu.
