February Member of the Month: Haritha Yearuva

Congratulations to Haritha Yearuva, Dallas SWE’s February 2020 member of the month!

Haritha Yearuva hails from Hyderabad, India. She relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, in 2010 to pursue a masters degree in electrical engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.  Moving to Boston was a significant change for her, both culturally and socially, as it was her first venture outside of India, away from her family and friends.   After graduating, she chose a career in the architecture and engineering industry, with a focus on the mission critical data center design.  Her company relocated her to Dallas in 2013 to support the rapid growth of the data center industry in the region, which serves as a major network hub along the nationwide fiber network.  Eight years later, she has expanded her experience, now focused on renewable energy, working as a Senior Electrical Engineer at Telios Corporation located in Dallas.

Haritha’s present focus is on the design of large scale solar photovoltaic installations providing clean energy to the utility grid.  She is constantly challenged by work in this evolving industry.  In 2019, she achieved her personal and professional goal of becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE), which gives her authority to be in responsible charge of major projects submitted to state and local municipalities for construction approval.

As she has learned and advanced in her career over the past eight years, she has become a mentor herself at the firms she has worked for, guiding younger designers from both a technical and a project management perspective.  Haritha has dreams of one day running a small engineering firm in the future where she can employ female engineers and provide an excellent service to the community. In the last eight years, she mentored good numbers of people at work and outside the workplace.

Haritha joined the Society of Women Engineers in the year of 2014. She has a passion for supporting women in the STEM industry.   In 2019, Haritha made it a point to become more actively involved in the local Dallas SWE chapter, and has found it immediately rewarding.  She has been involved in the organizing of the 2019 holiday party, and the 2020 social brunch, both successful networking events that brought SWE members together to develop personal and professional relationships.  At present, she is leading efforts in creating and implementing a mentoring program within the Dallas chapter.  She also works with both the membership and programs committees at SWE Dallas.

Outside the work, Haritha likes to travel, read, watch sports (mostly football) with her fiancé and loves going to the movies.

“I always knew I wanted to contribute to the empowerment of women in general and in the workplace, and in the process, I found SWE Dallas as the best medium to do that.  This past year the time and service I contributed to SWE gave me a sense of satisfaction and gratitude.  In every event, I get to meet new people and hear about their unique experiences and challenges. Hearing their experiences motivates me to do more with my life. Meeting other immigrants gives me a feeling that I’m not alone in my pursuit of professional and personal goals far away from where I was raised.”

December 2019 Membership Social Event Recap

Dallas SWE’s December membership social was a time of artistic flair and celebration on Thursday, December 5, 2019.

As a celebration of not just the holidays but of all our amazing Dallas SWE members and their amazing accomplishments over the past year. The night started off with some social time as all our members were able to reconnect with each other but also, meet new members to our section. Before long, our lovely hosts at Sip ‘N Drip Paint Parties were ready to start our artistic endeavors. The energy in the air was palpable as everyone got excited to paint their interpretation of the Dallas Skyline.

Our hosts were gracious to cater to all levels of artistry and the welcoming atmosphere just made it all the easier to have fun, let loose and create some good wall art. It was surreal to take a moment and walk around to experience that various colors and perspectives. All the artists were able to walkaround and see the ideas coming fruition

The night did not go without a fun surprise! Two of our very own Dallas SWE members were recognized with awards for their hard work and creativity. We celebrated our President, Zaineb Ahmad, who received the SWE 2020 WE Local New ELiTE Award and our fundraising committee chair, Haley Barnes, who received the SWE 2020 WE Local Guiding StarAward. We are so proud and excited to have these ladies as a part of our section and enjoyed celebrating them during our social.

Overall, what a fun night it was!! Dallas SWE is so thankful to have such an involved, passionate bunch and is off to a great start celebrating the holiday season!

January 2020 Member of the Month: Haley Hannenberg

Congratulations to Haley Hannenberg, Dallas SWE’s January 2020 Member of the Month!

While now living in Dallas, Haley Hannenberg is originally from Chicago, Illinois. She received her Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a Biomedical Specialization from Southern Methodist University. During her time at SMU Haley was actively involved in SWE serving as the membership chair, VP of External Affairs and President. She has continued to stay involved by most recently serving as a marketing chair for Design Your World and is part of the initiative to redesign the DYW website.

Haley also is committed to encouraging women in STEM at her workplace where she is an active member of the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) team. Haley works for Medtronic as a Research and Development engineer on new product development and manages their summer WISE interns. Each year she works to select three interns who are either about to enter their first year in college or have just completed it and mentors them in what it is like to be an engineer. They earn professional engineering experience and Haley hopes that this program will encourage young women to stay in the STEM field!

SWE provides an unique opportunity to connect with the most passionate and driven female engineers across the country. Being able to learn from the experiences of others and together work on any challenges in our fields builds an unparalleled community of support that I consider myself extremely lucky to be a part of.
