Event Recap: Dallas SWE Spring WE Local Conferences

Dallas SWE’s attendance at WE Local Detroit and WE Local Seattle was a great experience for our members. At WE Local in Detroit, held on February 17-18, our President, Rana Karimi, attended and delivered her talk on gender and negotiations. Rana’s expertise and engaging presentation captivated the audience, providing valuable insights and inspiration for women in engineering.

Additionally, we had three Dallas SWE members attend WE Local in Seattle on March 31-Apri 1. Our members showcased their knowledge and dedication to the engineering community. Notably, SWE is honored to recognize Dallas SWE Member, Ashley Johnson, for being awarded the WE Local FY23 Local New ELiTE Award. Ashley’s award honors SWE members with less than ten years of experiences in an engineering, engineering technology, or science related to engineering profession, who have demonstrated outstanding technical performance and proactively served SWE.

Additionally, at WE Local Seattle, our Secretary and Webmaster, Sammy Zellner, and our former VP of Membership, Claire Jordan, showcased their expertise by delivering insightful and thought-provoking presentations, leaving a lasting impact on the attendees. Sammy and Claire each presented two sessions, covering topics spanning from relocation, resume best practices, adulting 101, and email etiquette.

Dallas SWE’s presence at both WE Local Detroit and WE Local Seattle showcased the chapter’s commitment to professional development, SWE leadership, knowledge sharing, and empowering women in engineering. SWE conferences provide invaluable opportunities for our members to network, learn, and be recognized. We look forward to attending this year’s Annual conference in Los Angeles!

Event Recap: Negotiation Professional Development Event at UNT SWE

On April 4th, Dallas SWE President, Rana Karimi, spoke at UNT SWE on the topic of gender and negotiation. The evening began with an icebreaker for attendees to get to know each other. Once everyone was acquainted, Rana delivered her talk, with a keen focus on empowering women in the workplace. Rana provided invaluable insights and strategies to help attendees effectively negotiate their first starting salaries. Through engaging discussions and Rana’s storytelling on real world negotiation experiences, participants gained a deeper understanding of the negotiation process, learned to identify their value, and developed confidence in advocating for themselves. Rana’s anecdotes made the event both enlightening and informative, increasing awareness of the tools and knowledge to navigate their future salary negotiations successfully. The future of UNT SWE members is bright, as the attendees are more aware of the gaps and focus areas to proactively pursue equitable compensation in their professional endeavors.

Dallas SWE would like to thank and recognize UNT for their partnership on this opportunity, with special recognition to UNT SWE President, Jordan Rider, for coordinating and hosting this event.
