SWE Dallas held our first Professional Meeting of FY 16 at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science on Tuesday September 15, 2015. Our meeting was held in conjunction with and in support of the 2nd annual High Tech High Heels Friend Raiser. HTHH is a non-profit organization dedicated to closing the gender gap in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) fields in North Texas. They accomplish this by funding proven programs which include:
STEM Equity Training for Educators
STEM Career workshops for Educators
Physics Camps for High School Girls
The evening included Networking, a Wine Pull, a Silent Auction, entertainment by the Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership Academy and a Keynote Address delivered by Ray Upton, Vice President of Microcontrollers at Texas Instruments.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated to support your community during North Texas Giving Day on September 17! Even though our $1,775 is a small percentage of the total amount raised (Over $33 MILLION!), we are extremely grateful for each and every cent from the 11 generous donors who contributed to further the mission of Dallas SWE! Your donations help us support local K-12 outreach events, sponsor scholarships to local high school students, and fund professional development programs throughout the year. We’d call our first #NTXGivingDay a huge success, save the date for next year – September 22, 2016!
On September 16, Dallas SWE joined Light Reading at the NFV Everywhere Americas event at the Westin Galleria in Dallas for the Women in Comms breakfast! We enjoyed tasty food and compelling discussion from panelist members Nancy Green (Healthcare Global Lead, Verizon Enterprise Solutions), Brooks McCorcle (President, AT&T Partner Solutions), Monique Hayward (Director, Outbound Marketing, Network Platforms Group, Intel Corporation), and Bita Milanian (Senior Vice President, Marketing Communications, Genband) moderated by Sarah Thomas (Editorial Operations Director, Light Reading).
The group highlighted the expected need for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) workers in the next decade, the importance of including women in those technical and leadership roles, and their passion for encouraging the next generation of girls to develop their interests in these fields despite societal pressure to move away from STEAM as they enter middle school and high school. Communications technology has changed our societies and cultures around the globe so it’s important for teams designing the devices that connect us to mirror those societies and cultures!
Thanks again to Light Reading for inviting Dallas SWE to this event! Enjoy some photos from the event below.
