Event Recap: Capital One Corporate Spotlight

C1_Core_2CG_RGB 300dpiDallas SWE kicked off the beginning of our new year with the annual Capital One Corporate Spotlight event. On Tuesday, July 14, Capital One graciously hosted the members of Dallas SWE at their new Capital One Conference Center at their Plano campus and provided delicious heavy appetizers and drinks for the evening. Capital One has been a sponsor of Dallas SWE for several years, including our award winning outreach event, Design Your World.

The event started off with a meet and greet of Capital One employees and the members and guests of Dallas SWE. Dalia Soliman-Powers, Vice President of Technology, spoke to the 40+ attendees of her road to engineering, the twists and turns in her career path, and the positive influence she hopes to leave on her daughter and her daughter’s peers. Dalia highlighted the importance work-life balance, by taking pride in your work without losing your sense of self. She reminded all in attendance of the worth of women serving in technical roles and the skills they bring to the table. Dalia noted the importance of diversity in an organization, not only limited to gender, but also ethnicities, education, and life experience.

Following Dalia’s talk, Jennifer Phillips and Michele Rufus, from Capital One’s Diversity Recruiting, further highlighted the importance of diversity and inclusion at Capital One and any successful business, organization, and team. Purvi Patel and Tabitha Hill rounded off the night by speaking of opportunities in technology at Capital One.

Event Recap: Moon Day 2015

On July 18, Dallas SWE partnered with Fort Worth SWE to reach out to attendees of Moon Day at the Frontiers of Flight Museum! This is a great event to celebrate the anniversary of the first Moon landing with guest speakers, scientists, and engineers from across the aerospace industry.  We showed students how to build electronic circuits with resistors, potentiometers, LEDs and buzzers. Fort Worth SWE brought their aluminum foil boat station where kids constructed a vessel from one sheet of aluminum foil, then tested it in a tub of water to see how many washer weights it could hold before sinking. Hint: surface area is an important consideration! We had a lot of fun, thanks to the Frontiers of Flight Museum for another spectacular event, and thanks to Fort Worth SWE for joining us! Check out the photos below!

Event Recap: FY15 End of Year Celebration

What a great year it has been in Dallas SWE! As we wind down FY15, take a breath, and gear up for FY16, we took some time Tuesday, June 23 to recognize the accomplishments and service of our officers and volunteer members in the last fiscal year. Check out our Year In Review Newsletter!

Each FY15 Officer, Committee Chair, and Board of Trustees member was recognized for her contributions to the success of our growing section.  Dallas SWE is an all-volunteer not-for-profit organization and everyone on the section leadership team gives some of her free time, using her talents for the benefit of our members and our community. We truly appreciate everything they do!  There were also several special awards that were given by our Section President, Barbara Read:

  • Lori Wiltz received the Work / Life Integration Award for her work on the Programs Committee, heading up a professional development and industry tour event at Halliburton (her employer), and for recruiting volunteers to help with our signature STEM event, Design Your World!
  • Shelley Stracener received the Distinguished New Engineer Award for her efforts to communicate with Dallas SWE’s membership and the public through this website and social media accounts, for handling event registration and communications for Design Your World, and her dedication to the office of Section Representative for FY15.
  • Lynn Mortensen (who unfortunately could not attend) was recognized with the STEM Advocate Award for her work as Conference Coordinator for one Design Your World event and Volunteer Coordinator for both FY15 DYW events, and for her commitment to building relationships with our local Independent School Districts and their various STEM outreach programs.

We also recognized our new and renewing Scholarship Recipients for the coming academic year. Thanks to our Scholarship Committee for reviewing the record number of applications this year!

If you missed our celebration, please join us for the member feedback portion of our officer transition meeting July 25 (details to follow in a later post). We want to hear from you on what you’d like to see from Dallas SWE in FY16!  We’ll be updating our website in the coming week to roll over to FY16, but until then please congratulate our incoming FY16 Officers when you see them at one of our upcoming events!
