Event Recap – High Tech High Heels Friendraiser

HTHHlogoOn September 15th, several members of Dallas SWE attended the third annual High Tech High Heels Friendraiser at the George W. Bush Presidential Center! It was an evening of networking and silent auctioning for various donated prizes, ending in an exciting live auction for the larger prize packages including vacations and weekend getaways. Proceeds fund grants to equity training programs for educators and outreach education programs for local girls and young women interested in careers in STEM fields. Join Illuminate STEM, Women of AT&T, Society of Women Engineers and other corporations for a Saturday of fun activities & mentoring with STEM professionals.  Girls in grades 6th through 12th grade will participate in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics team projects.  Volunteers will help with checking in students, signing students up for SWENext, facilitating the team projects (training document will be sent before the event) and manning a Dallas SWE Information booth. Women in STEM face many challenges in having their voices heard and in being better advocates of their professional accomplishments. The confidence of many women in the field comes from gaining a better understanding of acquiring great communication skills. The communication skills are best enhanced through gaining influence in your field, being authentic and overcoming the imposter syndrome. The presentation “Your Story, Your Voice and Your Power” is all about mastering how to lead with value and attract opportunities with your brilliance.

Alicia Morgan

Alicia M. Morgan is a graduate of Tuskegee University with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Aerospace Science Engineering and New Mexico State University with a Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering with a Manufacturing Minor. Her professional engineering experience includes working at Lockheed Martin, The Boeing Company and Raytheon. Alicia transitioned into the nonprofit sector in 2013 while receiving Nonprofit Management Certification from CNM Connect in Dallas.

Alicia Morgan works tirelessly to promote STEM in K-12 education.  She is the Lead Researcher for an online portal that introduces educational and career options in STEM for Dallas County Community College District. She provides information for the online portal about mentoring, internships, research experiences, part-time and full-time jobs, and extracurricular opportunities. As a Site Leader at Heart House, she facilitated learning centers for K-8th grade Dallas Independent School District students resulting in increased enrichment in STEAM/STEM education, social skills development and reading comprehension.  As the Advisory Board President of the Academies of Engineering and Biomedical Sciences at Bryan Adams High School, Dallas, Texas, she impacts “Project Lead the Way” programs, and National Academy Foundation (NAF) certification focusing on education, culture and achievement in the Academy through strategic planning. She takes the lead in monitoring and improving the performance of the Academic Advisory Board of community leaders, teachers, school administrators, and district staff for community partnerships.

Alicia is the 2016 Honoree of Women of Color in STEM K-12 Promotion of Education Award. The award honors exemplary commitment to enhancing the opportunities for minorities in technology careers through promotion of scientific and technical education programs. Nominee must be a manager of education programs or other staff member from private enterprise who demonstrates an exemplary commitment to enhancing the opportunities for minorities in technology careers through promotion of scientific and technical education programs.

Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas is excited to launch our Pilot Programs at the STEM Center of Excellence at Camp Whispering Cedars– and we need your help! As part of our “I Can Be” initiative, we want girls to see and interact with experts from each program’s focus area. We want you to help us show girls they’re capable of more than they ever imagined.

As an “I Can Be” Mentor, you’ll talk up your career, take pictures with girls, and be the role model she’ll always remember. You do not need to prepare anything- simply come and be the face of your career! Click here find out more details about what girls will be doing on a particular date listed below.

Event Recap: Region C Leadership Summit

It’s great to be a part of SWE Region C!

Last weekend, eight of your Dallas SWE leaders attended the SWE Region C FY17 Leadership Summit where 77 collegiates and professionals from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas enjoyed a day of networking, professional development, SWE business, and inspiration!

First we enjoyed Kelley Johnson’s presentation on envisioning our success and networking with purpose. We all made 10-year vision boards which was a great exercise to do together and learn more about each other. Later, John Orendorff from the United States Air Force spoke about the programs the Air Force is implementing to recruit and retain women engineers. He also asked us, “Who will you inspire?”

We also had the opportunity to present two of our four Annie Colaco collegiate SWE leader scholarship recipients with their certificates and checks. The awards were presented by Dallas SWE Executive Vice President Nandika D’Souza, Annie Colaco’s granddaughter, to Naomi Beltrand (Collin College and UTD) and Liberty Schmidt (UTA).

In the afternoon, SWE Region C Governor Hope Toole-Schwalls shared the latest information on SWE’s FY17 goals and Governance Update changes. Four of Region C’s Leadership Coaching Committee members shared three SWE LCC modules with us: Strategic Planning, Team-building, and Effective Meetings. Dallas SWE leaders put together a plan to engage our local multicultural diversity partners to better serve our own diverse membership. We’re very excited about what FY17 holds for Dallas SWE!

Registration for SWE Region C Leadership Summit closes today!

A SWE Leadership Summit is an opportunity for SWE Leaders and those interested in SWE Leadership to get training on how to successfully run sections and manage your SWE career! Led by Region C Leadership Coaches, it will be a great weekend of learning and networking with your fellow SWE leaders. See the Region C website to sign up.

WE16 registration is now open!

SWE’s annual Society conference is an empowering event of over 9,000 attendees, a huge career fair, an outreach event called “Invent It, Build It,” and hundreds of inspirational speakers from every industry, engineering discipline, and career stage. This year’s event is in Philadelphia, PA October 27-29.

Please plan to join us and let us know you’re coming, especially if you’re interested in sharing a hotel room to save on travel costs! You can also volunteer at least 4 hours to get 50% off the cost of registration. Visit the WE16 website for details and to register!

In Dallas SWE, we value our members and offer a number of leadership opportunities for you to give back to SWE, enhance your own leadership skill set, and connect with our  dynamic and diverse section officers.

No matter where your passions lie, we have a place for you to use them in our all-volunteer organization!
