Congratulations to Ella Deane, Dallas SWE’s June Member of the Month!
In August 2022, Ella moved to Dallas all the way from rural Sunderland, Massachusetts following her college graduation to kick off a new adventure in the lone star state. Although not an active member in college, she had always wanted to join SWE and was excited to discover the Dallas Chapter. Ella joined the Society of Women Engineers in January 2024, looking to connect with other women in STEM and help the local community. She has loved it ever since!
Ella graduated with both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering in four years. She acquired both degrees from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in central Massachusetts. Beyond her degrees, Ella was also greatly proud of her diverse involvement outside of academia at the school. She played classical and jazz trumpet in several music ensembles. She was heavily involved in the school’s Outing Club, which strived to make the outdoors and rock climbing more accessible to students. As VP of the club, she worked with a local rock climbing gym to establish a reduced rate membership program for her classmates that also provided transportation to and from the gym – a program that is still active today. She played rugby for a season, hosted a podcast interviewing random students on campus, and could often be seen dancing for hours on end at the local line dancing honky-tonk.
After graduating, Ella accepted an offer with Raytheon as a Manufacturing Engineer in Dallas, TX. In her first professional job after college, she developed both her technical and soft skills, building her confidence as a young woman in engineering. She gained expertise in SMT, with a focus on automated PnP programming, capital equipment acquisition, and new product validation. After 1.5 years at Raytheon, Ella was looking to move into the medical device industry and got a job as a Manufacturing Engineer at Inogen in Plano where she currently works. She is thrilled to be supporting the production of portable oxygen concentrators that help deliver oxygen in a convenient way to patients who need it. Outside of work, she enjoys playing basketball, going to music festivals, and tending to her many houseplants.
Ella is passionate about empowering early in career women in STEM and fostering environments where women can be their authentic selves. She has planned several “Girl Power Happy Hour” events – casual post-work meetups at spots throughout DFW for early in career women in STEM to make new friends and connect beyond their job titles. If you are interested in attending one of her events in the future, please reach out to her at elladeane413@gmail.com.
Ella has enjoyed every event she’s been to through SWE, and has made great connections through the group. Her favorite part is hearing the unique stories of women from all backgrounds finding their way in their STEM careers. She hopes to see you at the next SWE event!
